CORPORATE SCHEDULING ANNOUNCEMENT LETTERS SENT

As of April 2, the OFCCP (Office for Federal Contract Compliance Programs) can schedule compliance evaluations from a second FY 2007 scheduling list of non-construction Federal contractors.  The OFCCP has already mailed a Corporate Scheduling Announcement to all parent companies whom they are scheduling an evaluation for this Fiscal year.  All establishments sent an announcement may not be evaluated, and companies not identified are still eligible to be.

EEOC EXAMINES WORK/LIFE FAMILY BALANCE & INTERSECTION OF JOB BIAS LAWS

On April 17, 2007, the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) reviewed the topic of work/family balance because it is considering developing enforcement guidance on the issue.  In a growing number of working environments women are failing to receive advancement due to them having children or planning to have children.  The amount of pregnancy discrimination charges has increased by 45% between the years of 1992 and 2006, which clearly shows that there is a problem.

WALGREENS SUED FOR JOB BIAS AGAINST BLACKS

On March 7, 2007 the EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) filed a lawsuit against Walgreen’s alleging that thousands of African American workers had been the victims of racial bias.  The EEOC charged that Walgreen’s assigns Black workers to low performing stores in Black communities and denies them of promotional growth.  The commission is seeking back pay, compensatory and punitive damages, as well as injunctive relief.  In 2005 former and current African American managers filed a private lawsuit against the company claiming similar accusations.  The case is currently pending in the U.S. District Court for Southern District of Illinois.

  Feb-07 EEOC TO LAUNCH E_RACE INITIATIVE AT COMMISSION MEETING

The EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) launched a new initiative at their commission meeting in February.  E-Race, which stands for Eradicating Racism And Colorism from Employment, plans to do just that.  It seeks to, “Combat and correct employment practices that discriminate against individuals and classes based on race and color, enhance public awareness of the persistence of race and color discrimination in employment through education, training and outreach, and partner with stakeholders and employer groups to implement best practices that foster inclusiveness and diversity.”
